How Johnson Winter & Slattery accelerates its billing cycle with Intapp Time

Johnson Winter & Slattery is engaged by major Australian and international corporations as legal counsel on their business activities, disputes, and most challenging transactions throughout Australia and surrounding regions. Its representation of major corporations in many landmark and transformational deals and complex disputes positions Johnson Winter & Slattery as a leading independent Australian firm. To gain this unique position, Johnson Winter & Slattery embodies the notion of quality over quantity by not requiring billing targets.

Founded in 1993, Johnson Winter & Slattery is a full service commercial law firm. The firm is headquartered in Adelaide, Australia.

This focus on quality requires a best-in-class time entry system. Johnson Winter & Slattery selected Intapp Time for its transparency of time recording and its intuitive user interface, along with passive time capture, to improve productivity and further embed clients at the center of all the firm does. Johnson Winter & Slattery deployed Intapp Time to more than 250 lawyers and staff in its offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. “Only Intapp Time was sufficient for the productivity that our lawyers expect, ” explains Ross Forgione, CIO, Johnson Winter & Slattery.

“Timesheets often become a time-consuming task for lawyers who could otherwise be delivering value to our clients. By capturing tasks as lawyers work on client matters, Intapp Time is enabling us to provide more efficient client service and timelier billing, with less fee earner time spent on administrative tasks,” says Gordon Radford, Executive Partner, Johnson Winter & Slattery. “The ability to enter time through the mobile app is especially important to some of our lawyers when they are working away from the office.”

Intapp Time accelerates our billing cycle with an increase of 75% in the speed with which time entries are released.

Accelerating the speed of time-entry

The deployment, supported by Intapp Professional Services, has been welcomed by both lawyers and staff. One partner comments, “Intapp Time is an excellent tool, obviously designed by lawyers for lawyers.”

Since going live in the winter of 2017, not only has Intapp Time pleased users, but it has also delivered real results across the business. The most notable improvement was a 75% increase in speed of time entry release, moving from an average of eight days to just two days. Furthermore, the firm sees improvement in its business operations.

“By streamlining time recording for lawyers, Intapp Time provides our finance department with a more accurate, up-to-the-moment record of work in progress and Intapp Time’s compliance features help prevent billing errors. Our firm and its clients benefit from greater visibility into the actual time spent on client matters, even if the work is performed on a fixed-fee basis. Intapp supports more sophisticated pricing and profitability analysis,” adds Forgione.

Johnson Winter & Slattery leverages Intapp Time with Aderant Expert, its financial management system. With the Aderant API, the firm easily integrates financial data in and out of the FMS system. The firm has relied on Intapp Integrate for more than three years as its systems integration backbone.

In one important instance, the firm used Intapp Integrate to populate their master data system as the single source of truth regarding firm operations and clients by taking data out of CRM, email, and Aderant Expert. “Intapp Integrate’s low-code nature enables our team to quickly create or modify integrations. Things that could take weeks now take hours. It has enabled us to spend more time focusing on meeting the needs of our clients,” says Forgione.
